The road to success in Hawai’i starts with being involved with the community. Learn about Hawaiian culture and connect with your neighbors and colleagues. We are working to facilitate these connections through social groups. Here are some of the programs and groups that are currently in the works:
AHEC Alakaʻi - Get connected with local physician mentors to learn about how to succeed in the unique cultural landscape of Hawaiʻi.
Interest groups - Go surfing, and fishing, and meet up with others in your community who love the same things that you do.
Professional Groups - Meet others in the industry to do the work that means most to you.
The goal of AHEC is to increase access to healthcare by both RECRUITING practicing healthcare professionals and TRAINING future professionals. You can get involved in health career panels, assist us in conducting hands-on workshops, provide shadowing opportunities, and act as a preceptor, which comes with additional benefits. Learn more about our student programs and how to get involved.
On June 13, 2018, Governor David Ige signed into law Act 43 which created the Hawai‘i Preceptor Tax Credit. Beginning in 2019, eligible healthcare providers who serve as preceptors to eligible students may apply for the credit. This tax incentive is expected to increase the number of providers who are willing to serve as preceptors for students who will eventually become primary care providers in Hawai‘i.
As the pandemic ravaged the tourism industry in 2020, a group of volunteer CEOs from different industries took it upon themselves to help the community and explore ways to build resilience in the economy. They created a temporary resident program to attract remote workers to actively contribute to Hawaii. Since then, we’ve successfully run two groups. As remote work evolves, Movers and Shakas is shifting towards helping newly relocated professionals, including returning kama’aina, to acclimate professionally, culturally, and socially to Hawaii. Our aim is to keep talent here in a new program called Hawaii Talent Onboarding Program (HITOP).
There are many opportunities for FREE CME credits in Hawaiʻi. In addition to these two resources provided by the HPB AHEC, view a full list of opportunities here.
