The Hawai‘i/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center is pleased to announce the Healthcare Education Loan Repayment Program (HELP), funded by the Hawai‘i State Legislature. HELP provides qualified educational loan debt repayment to health professionals licensed, or otherwise certified, to practice in and provide care to patients in Hawai‘i. The Internal Revenue Service defines Qualified Educational Loans under 26 USC 221(d)(1). The State expects HELP to help improve the number of providers in medically underserved areas of Hawai‘i, as well as improve the recruitment and retention of healthcare workers caring for the people of Hawai‘i by lessening the burden of large educational debt.
The Hawaii State Loan Repayment Program (HSLRP) is a federal grant to pay off educational loans for primary care and behavioral health providers who care for patients at non-profit organizations in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas of Hawaii. It is designed to incentivize care in the areas of Hawaii where it is most needed.
All HSLRP sites are required to be public or nonprofit private entities located in and providing health services in HPSAs that see all patients regardless of their ability to pay.
Description: Licensed primary care clinicians in eligible disciplines can receive scholarships and/or loan repayment assistance through an NHSC Scholarship and/or Loan Repayment Program.
Awardees must serve at least two years at an NHSC-approved site located within a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) with a qualifying score. Qualifying scores may change each year. After completing the service commitment, you may renew for another service commitment for additional loan repayment. Because there is no conflict between the NHSC and Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, it is possible to apply and participate in both programs concurrently.
The purpose of the Nurse Corps Scholarship and Loan Repayment Programs is to assist in the recruitment and retention of professional Registered Nurses (RNs), including Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), dedicated to working in critical shortage facilities that need more nurses. Nurses working towards an associate or a higher degree are eligible for the scholarship program. Nurses who have completed an associate or a higher degree are eligible for the loan repayment program. Also, nurse faculty with eligible loans teaching at an eligible nursing school may apply.

Provides financial assistance to students receiving education or training in a direct or indirect health-care services discipline (Title 38 and Hybrid Title 38 occupations); and assists in providing an adequate supply of such personnel for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). HPSP helps the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) meet its need for qualified healthcare professionals for which recruitment or retention is difficult. Each year the VA assesses the needs based on the annual workforce data. To see the specialties eligible for scholarships see the HPSP portal listed below
The Specialty Education Loan Repayment Program (SELRP) provides financial assistance to physicians in the form of a loan repayment to recent graduates of an accredited medical or osteopathic school and are currently enrolled or matched to a residency identified as a shortage by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The loan repayment is $40,000 a year with a maximum of $160,000.
