Family Medicine Physician on Hawai'i Island at Ka'u Wellness

I was born and raised in Ohio, the youngest of 5 kids. I have lived in Wyoming, Florida, Nevada and love Hawai’i the most! I believe part of my work on this earth is to help prepare a healthy, radiant body of Christ in this journey of life we are all on.

Went to school at NOVA Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and did an additional year of Osteopathic Principles and Practices Fellowship. Worked several Locum jobs until I found my “place” in Na’alehu, Hawai’i. I purchased a practice in Ocean View and called it Ka’u Wellness, which I have owned and practiced at since the end of 2016. In my free time, I spend quiet time with God, studying His Word, walking my 2 dogs, and enjoying the beautiful Hawai’i weather!

Favorite Local Restaurant: Coffee Grinds

Family Medicine physician from California

I am a family physician who grew up and trained in California. I’m married to another family physician, whom I met as an intern, and have three sons together in their 20s.

I’ve been in Hawaii since 1994 and worked in most of the practice settings Hawaii has to offer: Kaiser, military dependents, private practice, locums at HPH, and two community health centers, but my main source of income for 25 years has been with the UH medical school. I’ve got a number of grants and research programs to assess, develop, and support the workforce across the region. I like to travel, do yoga, and read novels. Oh, and write grants, weird, I know.

Favorite Local Restaurant: Chao Phya Thai or Assagio’s

Cardiologist currently on Maui

I was raised in South Bend. IN. I went to Notre Dame for undergrad studies and medical school at Indiana University. My internal medicine residency was in Dayton OH at Kettering Medical Center. Cardiology fellowship training was at Georgetown University Hospital and the VA hospital in DC. I retired in December 2014 from a 35-person cardiology practice in Grand Rapids. After retirement, I started locum tenens cardiology work in August 2015. During my years of practice, I have taught both family practice residents and PA students. In Grand Rapids, I served on the finance committee and on clinical practice committee.

My wife and I volunteer our time to provide meals to the homebound and to the homeless people in Maui. We also do the same volunteer work in Chicago. I regularly exercise weekly. My wife and I play duplicate bridge. I am an avid reader of history, historical fiction, government philosophy, and good detective novels.

My favorite dessert is hula pie

Retired Cardiovascular Surgeon on Maui

Having retired from private practice of cardiovascular surgery in Michigan for 40 years including residency, I was so eager to  move here for the climate, the people and their Aloha spirit of sharing their blessings.  Almost moved to practice here in the mid 80’s, but family pressures decided to stay where we were.  We have 3 adult children in Mainland and 4 grandkids.

Settled here in our new house in Jan 2006, and soon after found myself in a variety of activities: Hawaiian canoe paddling, joined the Maui County Medical Society and its welcoming physicians, one of whom is Dr. Leslie Gise, and interesting monthly talks & dinner. I managed to give a few presentations regarding missions with Medecins Sans Frontieres, 2006-2015 in conflict areas in Africa & Syria/Jordan. Also presentation of medical missions in the Philippines with our University of the Philippines alumni in remote areas. Learned a few things about medical & surgical practice from the group, from retired surgeons, active ER physicians, and the patients they treat, as well as the Aloha culture.

I was born in Washington DC where my father was doing his thoracic surgery residency. I lived in Pittsburgh, Houston, and settling here when I was 6yo. We lived in Palama for a while, and I eventually got into Punahou. After Pomona College, I ended up back in DC at GWU Med and actually met the MD that delivered me! I interned at JABSOM and finished my residency at Scott and White in TX. I  decided to work at Kaiser in GS, and found a niche doing surgical oncology. I would eventually become the chair of quality and risk for KP Hawaii. I also served on bioethics, NSQIP, KP national committees, and won teaching awards from the Tripler residents. I retired after working 30 years and immediately went with Aloha Medical on a Honduras mission. During the lockdown, I was able to study music (which has always been my passion having played in bands while working), and also took up pickleball while continuing to play golf.

Favorite Local Restaurant: Miro or Michel’s
